Light Plane Depth

Overview

Light Plane Depth (LPD) is a dynamic light sculpture that makes felt the construction of space from visual stimuli. Volumes appear from nowhere and dissolve again almost imperceptibly, phantom colors emerge, and retinal afterimages haunt the eyes as the visual system adapts to both extreme and just-noticeable transitions. Discrete light spaces are individually controlled, moving through transitions that reveal dramatic interactions between light, space and color.

Description

The sculpture consists of a set of concentric boxes set into a wall. Each box is lit independently with RGB LEDs. A nine minute composition of color and intensity explores the adjustments of the eyes and modulates the viewer’s sense of depth. Accompanying sound, projected from a loudspeaker and a subwoofer, consists of sparkling high frequency noise and nearly-infrasonic bass, synaesthetically reinforces the visual artifacts and induces a sense of delirium and drift.

LPD draws inspiration from Joseph Albers, whose paintings explore the power of color to create depth in the canvas and James Turrell, whose light installations trick the body into an uncanny relationship with the exhibition space.
